Krispy Kreme is reopening factory to provide free doughnuts for key workers

To help show its appreciation and support for critical key workers, Krispy Kreme doughnuts has reopened its first production site this week to safely serve people working on the frontline against coronavirus.

The doughnut brand has pledged to serve ‘half a million smiles, and will be delivering half a million Original Glazed doughnuts via contactless drops to hospitals, charities, food banks, police stations, carers and other community heroes.

After closing all manufacturing sites two weeks ago in order to implement new safety standards, new measures have now been launched to make sure production is safe – including social distancing at every step of the operation, running reduced lines of doughnuts and staff on site, appointing Covid-19 officers to oversee adherence to these processes and implementing a contactless delivery process.

The company’s factory line in Watford will reopen this week, and staff including the Krispy Kreme CEO, have already delivered the first 100,000 original glazed doughnuts across London and North to South Eastern counties, before extending nationwide through April.

Krispy Kreme also plans to recruit volunteers from its active head office and operations staff, who are keen to support from afar by delivering surprise doughnuts to the heroes in their local communities and neighbourhoods.

They are also inviting the general public to support the mission from home and ‘dough it forward’ by nominating unsung local heroes to receive a thank you in doughnut form.

You can nominate a hero by contacting [email protected] or via the brands social channels.

‘Our mission to create smiles and bring joy has never been more important,’ says Krispy Kreme CEO Richard Cheshire.

‘We know we aren’t saving lives, but we hope to do something as small and simple as making someone smile. It’s our way of saying thank you to people far and wide who are working so hard to keep our nation moving, safe and well at the moment.’

As an extra thank you, nine Krispy Kreme drive-thrus in the UK will begin reopening from 16 April, available to NHS and key workers only, who will be eligible to receive complimentary hot drinks and doughnuts.
